Doctor

  • Dr. Jenifer Hope Gustafson , DVM

Dr.Jeni has been called up for active duty full time for 6 months. She is a Captain in the Veterinary Corps of the US Army Reserves. Unfortunately, this means she will be out of the area until October 2009 providing medical and surgical care to military working dogs.

    Bio

Dr. Jeni knew she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was 7 years old and doctoring homeless creatures as a child. On her way to veterinary school she obtained a BS in Geology at Dickinson College and entered the US Army on active duty as a commissioned officer in the US Army Corps of Engineers. Her experience in the military gave her invaluable public relation and teaching skills. From the military she took away the stamina and discipline required to parachute out of aircraft or repel out of helicopters, and applied it to her veterinary medicine training. She graduated from UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. Soon after graduation, she acquired important clinical and business management skills while working with a large veterinary corporation. During that time, she discovered she preferred to run her own clinic to become "the advocate for the animal and educate owners to make informed decisions regarding the medical choices for their pets." She founded HOPE Animal Medical Center in 1998 with a vision to provide excellent medical care in a warm and friendly environment. She feels that HOPE gives her a place to take time to thoroughly examine every patient while offering her clients state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment that eliminates needless delays in treatment. Dr. Jeni's principal interest is surgery, and she has over 8 years in the advanced field of laser and endoscopic surgery. In addition Dr. Jeni is deeply rooted in the Athens community and often supports community events.

  • Sherri Turick , DVM

Dr. Sherri's inspiration to become a veterinarian was close to home. Her mother regularly rehabilitated injured animals. Once she acquired a black cat named "Cinderfella" who was severely burned. Caring for this cat made Dr. Sherri aware of animal suffering and inspired her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. She obtained a BS in Biology at the University of Miami in 1996. Dr. Sherri complimented her salary as a veterinary technician by dancing for the Miami Sunsations, the University of Miami's dance team. The discipline during her years on the dance team prepared her for the long hours required for veterinary school. She graduated from the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. During her time there, Dr. Sherri developed primary interest in dermatology, surgery and ultrasonography. She continues to learn by attending dermatology and ultrasonography workshops. Some of her personal interests include gardening, hiking with her family and dog, Branford.

  • Angela Dodd , DVM

Dr. Angela grew up in Toccoa, a small community in the beautiful mountains of Northeast Georgia. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Athens to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia. Dr. Angela graduated with honors, obtaining a BS in Psychology with an emphasis in animal behavior. Since moving to Athens, she has been active in many local animal rescue organizations and has found good homes for numerous strays that have been fostered in her own home.

Her interest in animals began at a young age, caring for family pets and injured wildlife as a child. A career in veterinary medicine seemed to be a logical choice. Dr. Angela graduated from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. As a veterinary student, she received several scholarships and awards for academic excellence and compassionate care of her patients. The newest member of the HOPE veterinary staff, Dr. Angela joined the practice as a full-time associate in December 2003. Her areas of interest lie in canine and feline internal medicine, cardiology, radiology, and infectious disease. In addition to caring for her many pets, Dr. Angela also enjoys gardening, reading, and is an accomplished pianist.
